Carmen is dual qualified, a Solicitor in England and Wales, as well as a Spanish Qualified Lawyer (Abogado) in Spain.
She holds an LLM in International Commercial Law from Sussex University and a Postgraduate Diploma in European Business from Canterbury Christ Church University.
Carmen deals with English litigation and commercial matters assisting national and international companies. She also deals with cross-border litigation matters and, among other cases, she is currently involved in defending personal injury cases issued in the UK against Spanish Foreign Insurers. Her clients are delighted as, apart from her understanding of both English and Spanish jurisdictions, she also speaks both languages. It saves them the expense and inconvenience of translations whilst also preventing possible culture clashes.
Although she mostly defends litigation claims, she also has a caseload of litigation private clients pursuing foreign insurers via the English courts for injuries sustained abroad.
In the last decade, Carmen has also developed her work in Spanish law. Her clients are primarily British individuals and law firms, which she assists with the Spanish element of their own cases. She is able to advise (among other areas) on the following:
- Spanish Probate/ Estate Administration
- Sale or purchase of Spanish property
- Transfer of Spanish property in Spain
- Renunciation of inheritance
- Preparing Spanish Power of Attorneys
- Spanish Wills
- Obtaining Spanish non-resident numbers (NIE)
- Certificates of English or Spanish Law
- Liaising with Spanish professionals to smoothly progress in an existing case
- Timeshares in Spain
- Debt recovery and Spanish litigation
- Banking matters
- Starting a business in Spain
- Legalisation of documents (apostille)
- International Sale of Goods
Carmen has an extended network of international connections worldwide, which makes her a good point of contact if you have any other international issue. She will be able to assist in over 50 countries.
She started her legal career in England in 2000 based in Brighton, specialising in dispute resolution. Her natural enthusiasm for work involving an international dimension soon prompted a career move to London, where she joined Irwin Mitchell’s travel litigation team.
Whilst training for her Private Pilot License, Carmen developed a keen interest in aviation law and developed further expertise with City firms Clyde and Co and Gates and Partners (now Kennedys Aviation).
In those firms, Carmen dealt with a wide range of legal issues, including liability and commercial matters for insurance and multinational companies, with a particular focus on Spain and South America.
With over ten years’ multi-jurisdictional experience with London firms, Carmen joined Mayo Wynne Baxter in 2013 to further develop the firm’s international services, as well as expanding the Spanish law practice.
She has now decided to continue her career as a Consultant Solicitor, practicing the same areas of English litigation and commercial law, as well as Spanish and International law.
As well as continuing to be passionate about aviation, Carmen also enjoys cycling, martial arts, dancing, travelling, and going on adventures with her children.

"It was a whirlwind but successful visit for completion and we're very happy with the purchase. Your professionalism and efficiency throughout the process was greatly appreciated and we are so glad that we had you with us every step of the way!"

"After my many poor experiences of other solicitors dealing with a probate matter, I instructed Carmen Calvo to progress the case to completion. It is difficult to express fully the sense of relief I felt when Carmen proved to be knowledgeable, professional, supportive and who practiced with the utmost efficiency. Carmen always answered any of my queries speedily and with understanding and progressed the case to completion with minimal input from myself. There were even instances where she would deal with the case when I later realised she was on leave. There was never an instance where she would not go out of her way to answer or resolve a query or other matter. It is perhaps best to sum up my experience of Carmen as like being as if she was dealing solely with my case with no other cases on her workload. I cannot praise Carmen enough."
